Today I ran my first 5K race. I did better than I thought I would do and it was a great experience. I had planned to go with one of my friends and we thought our husbands could bring the kids down to see us finish and then they could participate in the kids races. It turns out that she got a pinch in her neck! Our schedule filled up with gymnastics and birthday parties so Sam and the kids weren't able to come. I almost bailed out (and I was trying to decide if it was because I was getting scared or if it really had to do with the schedule) but I signed up anyway and I am so glad I did!
The race took place at Northwest Trek, which is a wilderness park with animals, etc... not far from Mt. Rainier. (About an hour drive South of where we live.) I left the house at 6:30am. I got to the registration area and was surprised by how many people were there. (Did I mention it was raining? Not the usual Washington mist, but real rain!) I received my bib number, t-shirt and counter chip, which you tie to your shoe. (I didn't know until this morning that the counters are used to calculate your time. In my mind I anticipated someone standing there with a stop watch!)
After I registered I saw an Occupational Therapist, Cara, that works in the same district as I, and she serves some of the preschool programs that I supervise. I went over to say Hi and I met her husband. This was their first race as well. I was glad to see someone that I knew, even though I only knew her through IEP meetings.
We got behind the starting line. The people doing the 8K were in the front, us 5Kers in the middle, and those doing the 5K walk in the very back. The horn blew and we were off. Well, for the first few steps it was more like a shuffle, but your time doesn't start until you cross the starting line. The serious runners were off! Cara and I seemed to keep the same running pace, which was great. We chatted a bit and I learned she has 4 kids, about the same ages as my own kids. We stayed together the whole race, not because either one of us felt obligated to, we just really were at the same level. We ran the first mile or so, then sped walked for a few minutes, then ran some more, then walked, etc...
My training was only done on a treadmill and I rarely pushed the incline button. I realized a few days ago that maybe I should have pushed it more because I had no idea what I was going to get into with this race, as I wasn't very familiar with the trail. (I had been to NW Trek once or twice before, but that was a long time ago!) There were a few hills, which actually didn't turn out to be all that bad. Going down the hills were a bit tricky as the road was wet. It ended up drizzling most of our run. It wasn't until the very end, as we crossed the finish line, that is started pouring again! (Thank heavens!)
Cara and I finished at the EXACT same moment. As we entered the last 100 yard area we ran as fast as we could. I don't know how we did it, but we both got the exact same time! It was great and I am so glad that I had someone to do the race with after all!

Not too bad for my first race. My goal was just to finish but I was not off from the average time and I didn't even finish last! :) I really want to run another race, now that I have a baseline. The Sound To Narrows race is in June but I don't know if I want to wait that long. I think it would be great if Sam wanted to do it with me next time....we will have to wait and see. :)

Healthy Living Blog

Happy 35th Birthday Sam!
Today Sam turned 35 years old. (I called this his Baby Asprin Birthday because now that he is 35 he gets to take baby asprin every day!) We went camping with our ward this weekend to Zion's Camp (owned by the church) in Belfair, Washington. We had a great time. This is a picture of Sam making us a dutch oven dinner. (Our first one ever to make by ourselves!) It was WONDERFUL!

Coming to Utah
Well, after much thought, we decided we are going to come to Utah this summer. With the cost of gas, home projects, etc... we weren't sure if we would make it or not. We plan to leave Federal Way on Monday, August 11th in the afternoon (once Sam has wrapped up the Internet Academy Summer School) and drive to Boise. Then on Tuesday, August 12th we will continue the drive to Cedar City. We plan to be in Cedar City from the 13th-16th. (Bummer timing, I know, with school starting and all!) We plan to go to either Zion's or Bryce Canyon on one of the days. (Anyone is welcome to join us!) We would also like to go to the temple and do a session. We were thinking it would be great if we could all go and thought maybe the morning of the 16th (it's a Saturday) would be better for most people's schedules, than to do it on an evening during the first days of school. Do you think that would work out? Tonia, do you think one of your girls could tend for us? After the temple we will head up to Salt Lake. (Abe, we would like to see you and Jane either on our way down to Cedar City or on our way up to Salt Lake, if that works for you guys.) We plan to have dinner with my family on Saturday night and then leave early Sunday morning to drive back. I have to be back to work first thing Monday morning. (Bummer!) Anyway, that is the plan for right now anyway. We are excited to see all of you!

Sam Hunt Family Update 5/23/08
I have not updated you on our family for awhile, so here it goes...
It has been 11 weeks since my second surgery. I haven't felt this good in such a long time. I am back to being - me! We are grateful that this trial is over! :)
We have 2 1/2 more weeks of school. (We get out on June 13th.) Sam is at State Track in Yakima, and should return home Saturday evening. He will be all done with coaching until this fall. (Whew!) We have Monday and Tuesday off of school and we hope to get some yard work done. The next few weeks will be busy, as the boys each wrap up their baseball season (between the boys there have been 40 games plus practices!) and Sam and I wrap up the school year.
The kids begin swim lessons on Monday, June 14th. There is a new community center here in Federal Way and the lessons will be there. We have never done morning lessons so this will be interesting. I think I will like the idea of 10 sessions in a row, instead of 10 sessions spread over 5 weeks. (Two a week in the evenings.) We signed up for sessions in June and end of July/early August. I am sure by the end of each session I will be more than ready to have them over. :) Caden and Whitney are in the same swin level and luckily, they have a class for Jesse's level at the same time so we will be there from 9-9:30 Monday through Friday. Sam will be there for a couple of the days but then he begins teaching Summer School on
June 17th.
Sam is teaching two Summer Schools this year - at a school and online. He hasn't taught online for a few years, but he wanted to this year. He should be done with both summer schools on Aug. 11th. We plan to leave for Utah on the afternoon of the 11th, if it all works out. We have to be back by August 17th because I go back to work on the 18th. I will work a little this summer - basically to get the Special Education Summer School started during the week of June 23rd, but then I plan to take all of July off.
The kids would prefer to spend the summer swimming, camping, and playing with their webkinz. We ordered a Wii fit - we will see if anyone likes it. :) I am sure some of the summer will be spent playing with the Wii. I would like to paint the high traffic areas of the house this summer. However, that will depend on how hot it gets. We do not have air conditioning because we really don't need it all that often. But, I wish I would have had it last Saturday. The temp. got up to 95 degrees and we were miserable! I hope we have a nice, warm summer but not a hot summer! Sam came home from track and I told him I didn't care how much it cost, I wanted air conditioning. After living with me for nearly 11 years, he knew to say, "Okay." :) It has rained all week.... I don't think we will be signing up for air conditioning anytime soon. :)
We registered Whitney for kindergarten and attended the "Kindergarten Round Up." I think she is excited, but nervous at the same time. She is ready for preschool to be over and to spend some time at home with mom. She will go to Kindergarten all day. Our state recently passed a law that in the next 10 years all kindergarten students will go to kindergarten all day. (At no charge to the parents!!! Of course they would have this law go into effect AFTER all my kids have gone to all day kindergarten with us paying for them to do so!) Next year more than 1/4 of our district elementary buildings will have all their kindergarten students go all day. By 09-10 it sounds like nearly all, if not all, of the elementaries in our district will be all day for all students. Oh well.... :)
Well, I guess that is all about us for now. We are excited to see family this summer, although it will be short. We want to go to Disneyland and Lego Land, but are thinking that may have to happen this winter.

Update
I have finally come out of the cave (or my bedroom in what it was previously referred to) for a few minutes at least. :) My past surgery was more painful than this one, but the recovery from this one is going to take longer. I have spent a week reading, scrapbooking and watching A LOT of movies. :) Sam has been a trooper and has done a great job taking care of the kids. I still have one more week of staying at home. I may try to venture to Target sometime next week. The only problem with that is that I will only be able to buy a package of gum or something similar in weight since I am not allowed to lift anything "heavy" for a few more weeks. Around week 6 I can begin cleaning the house again. I plan to go back to work for a couple hours each day beginning on Monday the 24th.
We purchased a Wii this week. (That is a whole other story!) The kids (and Sam) are enjoying it. I plan to join in their fun as soon as I am able. Right now we only have Wii Sports and Wii Play but we will be getting more games in the near future.
Jesse is going to turn 9 years old this week. He is wrapping up basketball season (playoff games are this week) and he is just beginning the Little League season. This is Jesse's sixth year playing baseball. Sam and Jesse have spent all afternoon searching for new equipment, as it seems Jesse has grown a bit since last season!
This Friday Jesse is going to have 3 friends from school sleep over. We plan to order pizza, have snack foods and let the boys play the Wii all evening. Jesse really likes the Muppet Show so we have The Muppet Show Season One, Disc One, on it's way from Netflix so his friends can watch it as well. (Jesse says that is his favorite one.) Jesse plans to purchase Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii with some of his birthday money. For Jesse's "Birthday Dinner" on Wednesday night he would like Velveta Mac and Cheese with Hot Dogs mixed in. Yummy! (I guess Sam and I will be ordering out!) Jesse didn't make it into the school talent show (they had nearly 40 kids try out and they took 18) but he was okay with that. He plans to play the piano in the ward talent show on March 28th.
Caden is continuing with Karate until the end of the month and then we will take a break until summer. He too has signed up to play Little League. (This will be his
4th season.) I think he screamed the loudest Thursday morning when he saw the Wii. The kids were out of school Thursday and Friday for Student-Led Conferences. Sam set the Wii up late Wednesday night after the kids went to bed. Then when they were getting up Thursday morning he video tapped them walking into the family room. It was better than Christmas morning!
Whitney has decided that she doesn't want to continue with ballet/tap. She saw a pink baseball glove and a pink bat at Target a few weeks back and she continues to ask to be on a T-Ball team. I told her she could, but that will have to wait until this summer. (Three kids playing the same sport during the same season will not work when there are only two adults!) Sam bought her a pink helmet last year with hopes that she would eventually play softball. :)
Sam is busy with track. Last week was busy trying to take care of me and the house hold while trying to get track up and running. (We both agreed it was the longest week of both of our lives!) We have a week off for Spring break coming up March 31st - April 4th. I think he is ready for a real break. (Because this past week was not a break at all!)
It is weird to have Easter in March. Today the kids went to a neighbors for an Easter Egg Hunt. (They do it every year. The family had 27 kids in attendance and over 500 plastic filled eggs. They fed everyone lunch as well!) Next Saturday, in between the Little League Jamboree (Opening ceremonies and group pictures), and birthday parties, we hope to dye eggs. I think the Easter bunny heard we got a Wii so we will have to see what he brings since he knows we do not eat a lot of candy. I think I will be happy when Easter is in April again.

Sam Hunt Family Update
We have had a busy week - but when is there a time when anyone isn't busy? :)
Sam is in between coaching seasons. He recently finished coaching wrestling and is preparing to begin coaching track at the end of this month. It is nice having him around to pick up the kids after school. It has allowed me to stay at work a bit longer and prepare for my next leave of absence.
I will be going into another surgery (and hopefully the last one!) on Friday, March 7th. They say I have to take four weeks off of work but I hope to be able to go in at least part time around the 3rd week. It sounds like my mom will come and stay with us the second week of my recovery. Sam plans to take off the first week. The fourth week is our Spring Break so come April 7th I will be back to work full time - and hopefully fully recovered. (For the most part anyway....)
Jesse is preparing for the school's talent show tryouts next Tuesday. He plans to play a song from Harry Potter, dressed as Harry Potter. The talent show will be sometime this spring. He has been reading the Harry Potter series. He is now in book 6. I asked him what he was going to read when he finished book 7 and he said, "Start with book 1 again."
Caden recently has discovered Pokemon. (This is the same age Jesse began collecting Pokemon cards as well.) This has kept him busy the past few days.
Whitney is excited to change her earrings on Valentine's Day. She had them pierced right before Christmas and at the time Valentine's Day seemed so far away - I can't believe it is just next week!
Tomorrow Sam and I celebrate 11 years from the day we met. How quickly time flies! :)

Up and about
Jeanne has taught me how to use the blog - once I was finally up at somewhat at it. Now maybe you will hear more from us.
I am doing well - still very sore, but I plan to go back to work on Tuesday. It sounds like I will be having one more surgery. I go to the doctor on Feb. 5th and will know more then.... (Joy...)

Washington Hunt Update
Well Mom mentioned this on Sunday and spent some time getting us on the system. So I thought I would spend sometime getting use to using it. We are just coming to the close of our summer, school starts next Tuesday. Julie has been back to work since last Monday so the kids and I have spend alot of time together and have had fun at the close of the summer. Mom probably pasted on the lost of our 99 carolla. Julie was hit (She is fine.) while coming back from Seatle. Since the car was so old they just gave us money and we went out an bought a new one. We really didn't want another car payment but the next day I was able to take on another class (for more pay) and that will help offset the monthly payments. I have attached a photo of the car I hope is shows up. I hope everyone is enjoying the start of school. Talk to you soon.
